Housing

For housing, we have reserved a block of affordable studio suites at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Savannah’s Downtown Historic District. These will be available at a reduced rate, at $139/night plus tax. Complimentary valet parking is available for institute summer scholars. The facility is within a reasonable walk of GHS (10-12 minutes) or participants may choose to ride a convenient and free bus service in the historic downtown area.  These studio suites at the Residence Inn feature separate living, working, eating and sleeping areas with fully equipped kitchens and complimentary WiFi Internet access.  For a full list of amenities visit their website at www.residenceinnsavannahdowntown.com.  Participants interested in staying at the Residence Inn will book directly with the hotel. You must make your own reservations by May 11, 2017. After this date reservations will be accepted if space permits. For those wishing to bring family members with them, please note that family members may not participate in formal Institute sessions.

The Georgia Historical Society is located in the heart of Savannah’s Historic Landmark District.  The history, charm, and beauty of Savannah lure over 6.35 million visitors throughout each year.  As such, there is an abundance of housing options—from intimate Bed & Breakfast inns to larger hotel chains—but be forewarned that demand for rooms in the Historic District is at a peak in the summer months.  It is the responsibility of each participant to arrange for their preferred housing.  However, as we seek to build and strengthen the sense of our scholarly community we encourage participants to stay in pre-arranged program housing.

Testimonials from former participants regarding group housing at the Marriott Residence Inn:

“The Residence Inn was absolutely top notch! I was amazed at the affordability compared to the amenities and location. The Happy Hour option was wonderful in that it allowed us as a group to unwind and decompress in a relaxed setting while still continuing scholarly conversations prior to going out for an evening. I would not change the lodging option at all!”

“The hotel was well situated and provided an opportunity for participants to easily access the downtown area.”

“Facilities were great! This was the first workshop where I didn’t have to spend a lot of money on food, since the hotel provided breakfast and snacks for free.”

“The Marriott Residence Inn was a very comfortable and hospitable place to stay. Loved the happy hour where several of us got together from the group to talk. The memories will be cherished along with the laughter.”
